camp tatiyee basics

Understand the guidelines and criteria for attending Lions Camp Tatiyee to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all campers.

who does camp tatiyee serve?

Camp Tatiyee is dedicated to serving ALL members of the Arizona special needs community. Every summer we offer eight, one-week camp sessions, each dependent on the age and challenges of campers.

Campers served experience challenges such as: spinal injury, traumatic brain injury, cerebral palsy, spina bifida, cystic fibrosis, muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis, amputation, hearing impairment, sight impairment, learning disabilities, intellectual challenges, down syndrome, epilepsy, and more. The camp can also accept those needing G-tubes and catheters.

Campers can be accepted starting at age seven and can attend throughout adulthood with no age limit (with the exception of Deaf & Hard of Hearing). Camp Tatiyee is the ONLY summer camp to serve the special needs community entirely free-of-charge.

is camp tatiyee really free?

Yes, summer sessions are offered at absolutely no cost! Camp Tatiyee does not require respite hours or any form of payment to attend. For more than 60 years, the camp has proudly upheld its promise that no camper or family will ever be charged to experience the joy and freedom of summer camp.

This incredible opportunity is made possible through the generosity of a wide community of supporters—including individual donors, corporate partners, charitable foundations, and the Arizona Lions Clubs. Their collective efforts ensure that every camper can enjoy a full week of adventure, friendship, and personal growth, completely free-of-charge.

You can help keep this legacy alive by making a gift today, ensuring future campers can experience the same life-changing week—at no cost to them or their families.

what are the behavioral expectations for campers?

Campers should demonstrate a mental age of at least three, possess a consistent form of communication, and exhibit no aggressive tendencies. If any of these criteria are in question, please submit a contact form with more information and we will advise on if your camper is eligible.

Campers not meeting these minimum requirements will be sent home, so please communicate with our staff clearly and openly about your camper’s needs and abilities.

are there any conditions that the camp cannot accommodate?

Unfortunately, we cannot serve individuals with psychiatric, emotional, or conduct disorders, or those with aggressive behaviors. We are only able to currently serve those with Autism (ASD1) on a case-by-case basis. For more involved medical assistance please reach out to our staff to confirm we are able to accommodate your camper.

We are able to take most medications and common conditions like catheters, g-tubes, colostomy bags, and others.

what should I do if my camper is non-verbal and attending for the first time?

Please e-mail Pam Swanson at Pam@camptatiyee.org to arrange a pre-camp visit to ensure a smooth transition and comfortable experience for your camper.

what is the policy for technologically-dependent campers?

Please make sure to bring your camper’s communication device with them to allow them independence and open communication in their camp experience.

If your camper is particularly technologically-dependent, we assess on a case-by-case basis to determine if we can meet their unique needs.
