january 2026 newsletter
a letter from our director
Dear Camp Tatiyee Supporters, Families, and Community,
Happy New Year! As we step into 2026, I am thrilled to share some exciting news! Registration for our 2026 summer camp season is officially open!
Each year, hundreds of campers look forward to their week at Lions Camp Tatiyee. Because we operate on a first-come, first-served basis, we encourage families to submit applications as early as possible. Once sessions are full, additional applicants will be placed on a waitlist, so now is the perfect time to begin planning for summer!
Alongside camper registration, we are also actively recruiting our seasonal summer staff. Our counselors and program staff play an essential role in creating the safe, joyful, and inclusive environment that defines Camp Tatiyee. If you know someone who would make a great counselor (compassionate, energetic, and ready to make a difference!), we welcome referrals and encourage them to apply.
In this month’s newsletter, you’ll meet Silas, a camper whose kindness and enthusiasm made him a role model among his peers. His story is a beautiful reminder of the growth, confidence, and connection that happen at camp.
You’ll also get a peek at one of our most beloved programs, the Mud Pit. It’s messy, joyful, and often the highlight of the week for campers who rarely get the chance to let loose and just have fun. You’ll see the Summer Youth Program Fund, whose longtime partnership helps make camp possible for more than 20 campers each year and allows us to offer our programs entirely free of charge. You’ll also find a simple way to give back and help ensure that every camper who wants to attend can do so.
Thank you for being part of the Camp Tatiyee community. Your support makes stories like these possible. We are so excited for the summer ahead and can’t wait to welcome our campers back to the mountain.
Yours in camping,
Pamela Swanson
Executive Director (Adult in Charge)
meet silas, camp empowered him
Silas is the kind of camper whose presence lifts everyone around him. From the moment he arrived at Camp Tatiyee for our Orthopedically Challenged School Age session, it was clear that he was eager to be part of everything camp had to offer.
Silas loved programs that let him create, explore, and get a little messy. The art room was one of his favorite places, where he could slow down, focus, and express himself. He also had a blast in the mud pit, diving into the experience with enthusiasm and a grin that made it impossible not to smile back. Whether he was splattered head to toe in mud or carefully crafting something at the art table, Silas brought the same joyful energy to every activity.
Cooking quickly became another favorite. Silas thrived in the kitchen, taking pride in following steps, helping when he could, and seeing a project through from start to finish. There was something especially empowering about creating something with his own hands and then sharing it with friends. It was a simple but meaningful experience that made him feel capable and confident.
What truly set him apart, though, was the way he showed up for others. Silas is a naturally kind and patient kid, always encouraging fellow campers and modeling what it looked like to participate fully. Younger campers watched how Silas approached each activity with determination and positivity, and many followed his lead. Without trying to be, he became a role model, someone who reminded others that showing up and trying your best is what camp is all about.
Silas thrived in an environment where he could learn alongside peers and, just as importantly, be someone others could learn from. Camp gave him the space to be himself, to explore his interests, and to shine in ways that felt authentic and earned.
We are so proud of the example Silas set during his week at Lions Camp Tatiyee. His warmth, enthusiasm, and willingness to engage made camp better for everyone around him, and we hope he knows just how much of an impact he had. We can’t wait to welcome him back for another summer filled with creativity, connection, and muddy fun.
mud pit: the messiest program ever
There are few places at Lions Camp Tatiyee that spark as much laughter, excitement, and pure joy as the Mud Pit. At first glance, it may look like simple fun with campers splashing, slipping, and getting completely covered in mud. But for many of the campers we serve, the Mud Pit represents something much deeper.
This program offers campers the chance to let go of expectations and embrace play without limits. In a world where many of our campers are often told to be careful, stay clean, or avoid risk, the Mud Pit flips the script. Here, getting messy isn’t just allowed, it’s encouraged. Campers of all abilities can participate together, supported by adaptive equipment and trained staff who ensure the experience is safe, accessible, and inclusive.
The Mud Pit is also a powerful confidence builder. For some campers, stepping into the mud is a bold leap outside their comfort zone. With encouragement from peers and counselors, they learn that it’s okay to try something new. Campers cheer each other on, share in the silliness, and bond over an experience that feels completely freeing. It’s often where friendships form fastest and barriers disappear.
At Lions Camp Tatiyee, we believe camp should be a place where joy is accessible to everyone. The Mud Pit embodies that belief: messy, magical, and unforgettable. By the end of the day campers may be covered head to toe in mud, but they leave with confidence, connection, and memories they’ll talk about long after camp is over.
partner highlight: the summer youth program fund
Lions Camp Tatiyee is deeply grateful for the continued partnership of the Summer Youth Program Fund, a longtime supporter whose commitment makes our mission possible year after year.
Through their generous investment, more than 20 campers are able to attend Camp Tatiyee annually, experiencing a full week of adventure, connection, and growth – entirely free of charge to their families. For many of the children we serve, this opportunity would not exist without the Summer Youth Program Fund’s unwavering support. That access is transformative, especially for children with disabilities who already face significant barriers to participation in recreational programs.
The impact of the Summer Youth Program Fund can be seen throughout camp. It’s there when campers like Silas discover confidence through creativity and teamwork. It’s there in joyful experiences like the Mud Pit, where campers are encouraged to let loose, laugh, and try something new. And it’s there in every friendship formed, every challenge overcome, and every memory created.
Their partnership allows us to provide safe, inclusive, and fully accessible programming that meets campers exactly where they are. From adaptive activities and trained staff to specialized equipment and facilities, their support ensures that every camper can participate fully in the camp experience.
We are profoundly thankful to the Summer Youth Program Fund for their dedication to youth development and inclusion. Their belief in our mission makes it possible for Lions Camp Tatiyee to continue serving children from across Arizona, opening the door to experiences that build confidence, independence, and lifelong memories.
